13 easy holiday outfit ideas with pieces you already own

Let’s get real for a second. The holidays are crazy enough without having to worry about buying a load of new stuff for yourself. The very idea of the season is to give selflessly to others while forgoing the wants of yourself.

With that being said, it’s still not a surprise that all of us want to look good for our holiday parties, work get-togethers, family dinners, and everything in between. The good news is–you’ve probably got all you need already sitting in your closet, so let’s put those pieces to good use!

13 easy holiday outfit ideas with pieces you already own

1. Leather skirt + sparkly top

This outfit formula is perfect for a holiday party! Chances are you probably already have a leather skirt (make sure it’s pencil length at least if you’re going to an office party) and some sort of “party” sparkly top. Pair them together and add a simple heel. Poof! You’re good to go. I really like to add one piece of complementary statement jewelry to amp it up a bit if I’m going out.

2. Sparkly top knotted over + an LBD

A simple style trick you can do for any occasion would be to tie a front knot with your sweater or top to go over a simple dress. It works to cinch your waist while acting as a modest completer piece for the perfect holiday look. Bonus points if your top is sparkly! Finish with a simple heel and statement necklace or earrings.

3. Sporty pants/leggings + a sparkly top + winter scarf

Yes, this is the same top from above. Another perfect example of why certain pieces are worth the purchase. You may think to yourself “what am I ever going to do with a sequin top?” but honestly, it’s a clutch piece that can be used for endless holiday (and non-holiday) outfit possibilities.

In this look, I paired the top with some sporty sequined leggings, a tartan scarf in complimentary colors, and simple black ankle booties. You could also replace the booties with this season’s superstars for an extra edgy athleisure look.

4. An LBD + moto jacket

So edgy, chic, and SIMPLE. Everyone owns an LBD. Throw on literally any type of moto jacket you own and this is the perfect no-brainer formula for a classy holiday party. Bonus points if the jacket has some sort of sparkle!

5. Striped top + bright heels + printed jacket or blazer

Mixing prints is a trend that works on literally every body and for every budget. You know you own a striped top and you more than likely could root through your closet to find some sort of printed jacket, blazer, or cardigan. As long as the two have similar print sizes and colors, you’re good to go. Finish with bright heels in a complementary color for extra pizzazz.

6. Graphic tee + distressed jeans + plaid/red/green jacket or blazer

Graphic tees were a trend that emerged about three years ago, and in my opinion have been able to stand the test of time. Nowadays, they tend to be very simplistic and that’s a good thing. This particular tee says “Egg Nog made me do it” and is a purchase from Old Navy last year, but any graphic tee works for this type of look. Finish the casual and edgy look with your favorite pair of distressed denim, neutral booties, and a jacket or blazer reminiscent of holiday hues *my  favorite is tartan* for a look that is on key with the season while staying true to weekend wear.

7. Leather leggings/pants + metallic sweater + puff vest

Leather pants/leggings are a surprisingly versatile piece to have in your wardrobe. I’ve worn them with everything from a button down shirt to graphic tee and literally everything in between. For an edgy, yet warm & cozy look pair them with a metallic sweater and your favorite puff vest!

8. Buffalo check/plaid shirt + Nordic sweater

Remember when these weren’t cool? Well, these once thought to be cheesy Christmas sweaters are back and couldn’t be cuter. Pair any Nordic-type sweater with that buffalo check or plaid button down that was on heavy fall rotation in your wardrobe to create a stylish and complementary duo. Style tip: work contrasting, but complementary hues like red & blue or mustard & red to avoid the two pieces blending in too much with one another.

9. Cargo vest + striped top + plaid scarf

One of my standby looks: sport the cargo vest you’ve probably had since 2012 with a striped top/sweater & printed winter scarf to print mix while remaining happily bundled up for the chilly weather.

10. Holiday leggings + oversized sweater + riding boots + scarf

I’m a huge believer in the “completer” piece. The idea that every outfit needs a standout piece that sets you apart from everyone else. Most people don’t take the time to add the completer piece, so this sets you apart by complementing a color, print, or personal style aspect within your outfit.

Since these holiday leggings stand out with their red hue, red should really also be present somewhere else within the outfit. A blanket scarf pulls double duty here from color matching to coziness. Throw on a pair of riding boots and a chunky sweater for a look that goes from decorating to an impromptu date night.

11. Chambray shirt + blanket scarf + neutral cardigan + leather skirt

We know you have a chambray/denim shirt *if you don’t then what the heck are you waiting for?!*, mix it up with a neutral cardigan (bonus if there’s sparkly embellishments for the holidays!), a leather skirt or pant, and a simple blanket scarf. This look works for pretty much any occasion!

12. Striped sweater + bright cardigan + winter scarf

So simple, so chic. The key here is making sure you stick to a simple and interesting color palette. Mustard is one that looks good on pretty much everyone and bodes well with holiday colors from red to green, gold & silver, and even blue. Work a scarf that integrates the colors in your striped sweater/top as well as cardigan and it’ll looks so effortlessly chic.

An unexpected piece like tartan or striped flats can really make an outfit pop. {similar sweater here} Pair with like colors and prints for the perfect casual holiday look.
